Progress Update 2

The week started with a surprise from Meyya, she got us a softies book. The book contained patterns, sewing tips and how to do instructions. Thank you Meyya

I was inspired by the Rubydoll , and decided to make my own. I got a rough idea of how I want the doll to be, but I was at loss of how I want the face to be. Then it hit me! I wanted to capture the smile of my 4 years old niece Hadeel (she does have the cutest smile ma sha Allah). With at in my mind I started drawing the pattern. I used an old jeans dress to make the body, and the pink felt to make the face and arms. and this was the result. As you can see the sewing is not that good, I am still struggling with the backstitch and slipstitch but I am getting the hang of it slowly. I wanted black felt to make the eyes and eyebrows but had to do with Sara's blue fabric.

In the meantime Sara continued working with her first pattern, and produced this which was different from what she wanted. The eye piece was suppose to be bigger and she wanted the tie piece to be of felt. Other than that, I think the eye expression are top notch.

Eid arrived and we got busy with gatherings and feasts, but I spent some time working on a new pattern. I liked what I drew so much, and wanted to make it ASAP. Used and old towel of Namika and some white felt. I wanted to capture the anime character expressions and I think I kinda did lol!

Progress Update 1

So we've been drawing, cutting & sewing all week. We started with my prayer dress which was a gift from Abduallh (sorry brother!). What Sara made, she gave to Jana (our 3 years old niece) both she and her mother loved it! I thought it was very ugly, cause Sara only sew the doll without adding any decorations (eyes, lips...etc), she only drew eyes and tie with a marker. My doll was uglier, I didnt get the propotions right and the end product was mermaid like thingi (we use it now as a pincushion lol).

We went and bought some fabric, I fell in love with a lesso/kanga fabric, I liked the colors and pattern which was so omani. Sara opted for a plain thick blue fabric, which was a bit dull. It wasnt easy finding the right fabric, we visited four shops and nothing was wow to us. We both decided that we needed felt fabric, and the only shop that sells it was Al-Hathrami. One meter costs 2.8 R.O and they didnt have many colors we got 1/2 meter of pink and white. We so need a craft shop here in Oman!!

Anyways here are the dolls (well not dolls , semi-dolls lol) we made this week , Sara's is not included since Jana refuses to let go of it. Also the first two I made are not included, I dont want to give you nightmares!!

softie #3 used my mom sofa fabric & prayer dress

This one my mom sewed it for me, I did the eyes

The Beginning !!

It all started with Sarah, who is into soft toys and use to have a collection when she was living in Japan. She started talking about how much money ( to get my attention of course!) we can make by making & selling softies (the terms was new to me at that time and she had to show me some pictures) & how easy it is! All you have to do is sew some fabric and fill them with cotton!!
I brushed her off, I was never a fan of sewing and I wanted to concetrate on writing which is my passion. Of course she would not budge and kept making pans and talking excitedly about "Our" softies.
Next morning I woke up to find scattered papers on both of our bedside table. Sara stayed up drawing characters, she drew 6 or 7 characters and they were really good! However I was still not convienced, I didnt want to get into another project, when I am still not done with the ones I have. But she didnt stop kept showing me blogs of ppl who make softies at home to give their childern and friends. slowly I started getting into the idea, I started making little drawings of weird stuff lol (mine were not good as hers!), downloaded tutorials and patterns, even my mom got excited and gave us old clothes and fabrics to work with, and now I think the maid wants in!
In this blog we will record our weekly progress, our "adventures" and our hopes and dreams...so keep reading us!!
